Tesla Model 3 Police Car Lights by HG2 Emergency Lighting

The Future of Emergency Vehicles – The Tesla Model 3 Police Car

The Bargersville, Indiana Police Department added the Tesla Model 3 to the team, and it has been a big hit with the local residents. They are looking for the future in their technology for law enforcement, that will not only change their town, but possibly the nation with their new improvements.

After Chief Todd Bertram made a routine traffic stop, he got a resident that “All he wanted to do was talk about the Tesla.”

Back in August 2019, when it was tested, the Tesla Model 3 replaced 1 of 4 Dodge Chargers used for patrolling, and they have plans for transitioning all their other vehicles to Tesla models.

In an interview, Todd Bertram cited that the change is actually for a more cost efficiency alternative, that would save the department as much as $6,000 per year per vehicle, and could save the tax payers $300 a month on gasoline costs.

The police department plans on upgrading their Dodge Chargers to Tesla vehicles. Right now the department is spending more than $8,000 USD on gas, oil, and insurance on their current vehicles but with the change, this number would dramatically decrease.

“Even the tires and the windshield is cheaper on the Tesla” said Chief Bertram in an interview.

The new vehicle for the department is considered the new future for all city and local law enforcement. The electric car is environmental friendly but also a cost saving move.

The new Bargersville, Indiana Police Tesla Model 3 features the HG2 Emergency Lighting Side Runner®, an extremely versatile emergency lighting system designed for maximum visibility with a minimal foot print.

HG2 Emergency lighting Police Car Lights -rear runner - vehicle lights - hazard lighting

The HG2 Side Runner® will enhance the outline of the Tesla Model 3 profile (side of vehicle), through the variable flash patterns and lighting intensity. It features super-bright, wide-angle LEDs, and a high-impact CAB housing. The HG2 Side Runner® gives extra safety for the law enforcement using the vehicle for their visibility all around, and brings the car to the 21st Century with their modern sleek design.

For some Officers, the best feature of the Tesla Model 3 is that there is no fuel required and it doesn’t have a loud engine, which is perfect for the night time, or for being undercover when they need to move discretely. The HG2 Side Runners® assist into that extension, where the unit gets concealed and blends with the vehicle, but the moment the lights turn on, they make a big impact and illuminate all around.

HG2 Emergency lighting is proud to be part of this new step towards the future in emergency vehicles, and as always keeping first responders and citizens safe. We pride ourselves on being an American made company, and be associated with a company like Tesla motors, whose main manufacturing plant is in the USA. Special thanks to Passive Security Solutions for being the outfitter behind the new Tesla model 3 police car, and trusting our engineering and design for their creation.

We are always working to manufacture and engineer innovative products that improve safety and visibility. HG2 is committed to bringing the newest and most advanced technology to emergency lighting. We look forward to many more contributions to the forever developing technology for our emergency responders and to serve those who served us.

Walk Like MADD Clermont HG2 Emergency Lighting Police Enforcement on Drunk Driving

Walk Like MADD – The Fight Against Impaired Driving

“On average drunk driving will impact two out of three people in their lifetime. Every two minutes, someone is injured in a drunk driving crash. Twenty eight people are killed every day by drunk driving.” – Walk Like MADD [1]

Walk Like MADD - The Story

On September 5, 1980, Candace Lightner decided to take a stand and make a change. That year, more people died on the roadways due to drunk drivers than the number of people who died in war. Lightner, who had lost her own daughter to a drunk driver, founded Mothers Against Drunk Driving.

After dealing with the tragedy of this horrific incident, Lightner was a mother on a mission. This mission: to end drunk driving, fight drugged driving, and prevent underage drinking. MADD also gives support to victims and affected families. Since 1980, MADD has opened offices nationwide and become one of the biggest non-profits in the country. Despite this growth, MADD remains a grassroots effort with the focus on the number ‘zero’.

The organization works tirelessly for “zero deaths, zero injuries, zero families impacted by impaired driving.” – MADD.org

Walk Like MADD - Police Enforcement on Drunk Driving

The impact in the community

MADD has become one of the most active groups to make positive changes in local communities. In its fight against impaired driving, MADD has saved more than 370,000 lives. Deaths relating to impaired driving have decreased by half thanks to the public education efforts of MADD.  MADD works with law enforcement and legislators to create stricter laws and advance technology. In fact, MADD helped raise the legal drinking age to 21 and set the legal blood alcohol concentration (BAC) to 0.08. Both of these laws affect all 50 states of the United States!

While it may be at the forefront of the movement, alcohol is not the only substance that can impair a driver. Drugged driving is another major issue that MADD tackles. This includes over-the-counter medications, prescription drugs, and marijuana–all of which could affect safety. One in four drivers tested positive for one of these drugs.

Walk Like MADD - Police Enforcement on Drunk Driving

The Solution

Although MADD has accomplished a lot, the organization has its sights set higher. Every year there are 290,000 people injured and 10,000 lives lost by drunk driving. MADD has made its sole purpose to reach zero fatalities and injuries in the road from this problem.

MADD’s campaign “Eliminate Drunk Driving” has 4 initiatives.

The first initiative is to support high-visibility law enforcement in the community. If it is easier to get caught while drunk driving, many are less likely to drive under the influence. In fact, DUI checkpoints can reduce drunk driving deaths by 17%.

The second initiative is mandatory ignition interlock devices for convicted drunk drivers. This device forces offenders to provide a sober breath sample before driving. Ignition interlock devices keep drunk drivers off the roads and reduce repeat offenders by 67%. If adopted nationwide, these devices could save 1,000 lives each year.

The third is a proposal for the development of further advance vehicle technology. One idea is to have an alcohol detection system in the car that utilizes a breath and touch sensor. If the vehicle senses a BAC over the 0.08 limit, the car will not move. If adopted, zero victims from drunk driving could become a reality.

Lastly, MADD wants to include everyone in the effort to help end drunk driving. We all share the responsibility to help end drunk driving. Thanks to designated drivers, taxis, public transportation, and ride-sharing apps, there is no excuse to drink and drive.

Walk Like MADD - Police Enforcement on Drunk Driving

Walk Like MADD - The Event

Part of the initiative is to get everyone involved. MADD started the signature event “Walk Like MADD” that aims to raise awareness and money to put an end to impaired driving. Up to ninety cities host these events and tens of thousands of people partake in it. They have raised over three million dollars to help victims affected by drunk and drugged driving.

Walk Like MADD is a way for the community to get together and raise awareness of the cause. The event is also an opportunity for victims to heal with other affected families. Surviving families can share their stories and emotions and receive community support.

HG2 Emergency Lighting Involvement

HG2 Emergency Lighting supports MADD because everyone deserves to get home safe. No family should have to experience the loss of a loved one due to the irresponsibility of a drunk driver. No one should be robbed of their life as a consequence of someone else’s bad decision.

This is one of our main causes, and we are proud to associate with MADD by participating in their events.

Walk Like MADD Clermont HG2 Emergency Lighting

Hosted by Clermont Police Department and MADD, “Walk Like MADD Clermont” took place on September 14, 2019. The 5k unites victims, survivors, and supporters to remember loved ones and commit to a nation with zero victims.

MADD Central Florida tagline for the event is: “We Walk for those who no longer can, and alongside those who are learning to walk again. We Walk with supporters who share our mission no more drunk driving victims. We walk because together we will end drunk driving.”

Take a pledge to end drunk driving. You can get involved and be part of the solution by visiting www.madd.org. For future events in your area visit www.walklikemadd.org

HG2 Emergency Lighting No more texting and driving the new florida law

No more texting and driving – New Florida Law

No texting and driving - Prohibition of wireless communications devices while driving

We’ve all seen it, we’ve all heard it. “Don’t text and drive!” We’ve seen the ads, but research from AAA revealed that 35% of Americans still admit to texting and driving. In 2018, Florida had on average 140 crashes a day. If you are travelling 55mph and take your eyes off the road for 5 seconds, you’ve travelled the distance of a football field! So, if you are thinking of texting and driving, think again! Not only do you endanger yourself and others, but there is a new law in Florida that makes texting and driving a primary offense.

The New Texting and Driving Law

The new Florida texting and driving law took effect on July 1, 2019. This law joined the Florida statute in the Title XXIII of Motor Vehicles. Section 316.305 ‘Wireless communication devices: Prohibition’ section 3.a states:

“A person may not operate a motor vehicle while manually typing or entering multiple letters, numbers, symbols, or other characters into a wireless communications device or while sending or reading data on such a device for the purpose of non-voice interpersonal communication…”

However, this law is nothing new. According to AAA, 44 states already have similar laws that make texting and driving a primary offense. In fact, texting while driving was already prohibited in the State of Florida. Previously, officers could cite drivers for texting if they were being pulled over for a different violation. Until now, the law considered texting a secondary offense. In the new law, texting is a primary offense and officers may pull over and cite drivers for texting alone.

Police Cars texting and driving

When will the new law be enforceable?

Some departments have started an “education period”. This means that officers will only give warnings to offending drivers, even though they are able to issue citations. The “stop and warn” period will completely end by January 1, 2020. Starting New Year’s Day, police officers will begin issuing tickets for texting and driving.

Another new aspect of the law requires drivers to be completely hands free in school zones, school crossings, and work zones. This means that drivers cannot hold any type of wireless device in their hands in these zones. Drivers should avoid doing this now, though the provision does not take effect until October 1, 2019.

What is allowed?

Although not recommended, the new law permits drivers to hold their phones while they are talking. However, active school and work zones are wireless-free zones, meaning no phone usage is allowed. The new law applies only when the motorist is driving or the vehicle is in motion. If the car is completely stopped, the driver may legally type or text on their phone.

Under this new law, drivers may use their phones for GPS or any other navigation systems. However, it is highly recommended that the driver puts the address in their navigation system before they start driving. Drivers may also use their phones for messages related to navigation, weather alerts, and emergency traffic, or to report emergencies.

Police Law Enforcement texting and driving

What are the penalties and fines for texting and driving?

Breaking this law would result in a fine of $30 for the first offense, plus court fees. This can add up to $108 in places like Brevard County! Drivers will not receive any points on their license for the first violation, unless the offense occurs within a school or work zone with workers present.

The second or subsequent violation will set you wallet $60 dollars lighter, plus any extra court fees. (Any violations within 5 years of the first violation are considered subsequent.) The second violation will add 3 points to your driver’s license. Either the initial or subsequent violation is considered a noncriminal traffic infraction, and is punishable as a non-moving traffic violation.

Passing of the Law

Gov. Ron DeSantis passed the law, because he said that the Florida state is the second worst state for distracted driving and that in 2016 alone, the crashes due to distracted driving caused 233 deaths. When the bill went on for voting, the State House voted 108-7 in favor of the bill.

“When driving without a seat belts became a primary violation, more people began wearing seat belts. We’re hoping as a result of this law, fewer drivers will text.” Said Mark Jenkins, a spokesman for AAA.

Data Research

AAA research shows people who text and drive are 8 times more likely to be involved in a crash. The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles reported that for 2018, there were more than 51,000 crashes involving distracted drivers across the state of Florida. Since 2016, the number of fatalities in Florida has reached 3,000, a number that law enforcement says is partially due to distracted driving. For 2019, the fatalities in auto crashes is expected to increase. This law takes effect on a perfect timing, in hopes that will make our roads safer, and prevent future crashes.

Florida traffic fatalities - Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles

Texting Hands-free technology?

This law as of right now allows for hands-free texting, but this is still a distraction that poses a dangerous threat. According to AAA, potentially unsafe mental distractions can persist for as long as 27 seconds after changing music or sending voice texts or other voice commands. “The lasting effects of mental distraction pose a hidden and pervasive danger that would likely come as a surprise to most drivers,” said Peter Kissinger, President and CEO of the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. “The results indicate that motorists could miss stop signs, pedestrians and other vehicles while the mind is readjusting to the task of driving.”

Florida is one of the last states in the US to make texting and driving a primary offense. This has been a long wait, but finally this law will help law enforcement stop distracted drivers and educate them in proper driving practices. Although the new law doesn’t prohibit all distractions, it is safer to eliminate them for your safety and others, and just focus on the road. Put down your phone and check it when you reach your destination. Remember, it can wait!

Always Getting Brighter: the History of Emergency Lighting

The History of Emergency Lighting

All around us, we see technology change and improve. Televisions, phones, and computers change right before our eyes all the time. Even lighting is always advancing thanks to technology and expert engineering. Emergency lighting is pretty hard to miss when you see it, but it wasn’t always as bright and effective as it is today!

In fact, it took a little bit of time for lighting to catch on for emergency vehicles. The first ambulances in New York City were horse-drawn and simply sounded a gong to alert people to move aside. Though early gas-powered ambulances utilized dome lights, it was only on the interior to illuminate the passengers. In the early 1900s when police departments across the country began patrolling precincts in cars, there was no way to differentiate police vehicles from civilian vehicles. Thus, police drove around in convertible cars, so civilians would see the officers’ hats.

police car - police lights - police car - police car lighting
The first lighting implemented on police vehicles was the single rotating beacon light.

The Beginnings of Emergency Lighting

Emergency response teams began using lighting around the 1940s, when police began using a single rotating beacon light (also called a gumball light because of its resemblance to the dome top of a gumball machine). By the 1960s, single lights gave way to light bars. Light bars offered greater visibility than the beacon light, especially from the side. Even though we still see light bars today on police vehicles, the original light bars were magnetic, while modern light bars are mounted to the roof of the car. Some of the first exterior lighting for ambulances originated on a 1965 Chevrolet model, when an extra set of tail lights were modified to fit above the windshield.

Aeronautical and nautical vessels had long used blue lights to indicate direction, but it wasn’t until the late 60s that blue lights were introduced to the emergency vehicle system. Because different emergency response teams utilize different colors of lights depending on local regulations and laws, the introduction of blue helped avoid confusion. Blue lights are also more visible at night and stand out from the red lights of vehicle tail lights.

emergency lighting led - led emergency lights - advantages of led

Modern Lighting for a Modern World

Modern emergency response vehicles rely on light-emitting diodes, or LEDs. Though the initial cost is higher with LEDs, they are more energy-efficient and last longer than traditional bulbs. On average, a traditional bulb lasts between 1000 and 1500 hours. Meanwhile, an LED lasts over 50,000 hours!  LEDs are also resistant to extreme cold and humidity, so they do not need to be replaced as often. Despite being more energy efficient than equivalent incandescent bulbs, LEDs are much brighter for the consumed wattage. LEDs are small, offering a flexible range of use, and do not emit heat like traditional bulbs.

Advancements in lighting have come a long way, but the industry is constantly evolving and improving. Many modern emergency lights operate with a digital control interface. While many lights still function on an on-off basis, a digital control system allows a greater range of use. For example, digital systems offer different kinds of signals, log usage, and can increase or decrease output.

HG2 Emergency Lighting is proud to be part of the continued improvements in keeping first responders and citizens safe. We strive to create innovative products that improve safety and visibility. HG2 are the originators of side lighting and we are always innovating, never imitating. Once again, history has been made. What was once a new idea is now an industry standard with imitators following our lead and producing their own side lighting products. However, history is changed through innovative designs and cutting-edge technology, not imitation. HG2 is committed to bringing the newest and most advanced technology to emergency lighting. We look forward to many more contributions to the history of emergency lighting and serving those who serve us.

HG2 emergency lighting at the Florida Law Enforcement Liaison Award Ceremony 2019

HG2 at the Florida Law Enforcement Liaison’s Award Ceremony 2019

The Florida Highway safety and motor vehicles reported that in 2018, the state of Florida had 401, 851 crashes. From those, 166,628 crashes caused injuries resulting in bodily harm, and/or complaint of bodily damages to a person.  Of the total crashes, 2,935 were fatal resulting in the death of one or more people within 30 days of the crash, and in total there were 3,150 fatalities [1]. For 2017, there were 402,385 crashes. From those, 2,924 were fatal crashes that caused 3,116 fatalities [2]. Law enforcement works on daily a basis to reduce these numbers by enforcing and educating the public on driving behaviors. Therefore, re-enforcing the rules that can make a big change when it comes to your safety on the road. For Instance, some simple behaviors like the belt use, not texting while driving, and of course, only getting behind the wheel when you are sober and alert. All things to encourage traffic safety initiatives.

emergency lights - independence day

Sparkle Bright this 4th of July!

Sparkle Bright this 4th of July!

Americans from sea to shining sea prepare for Independence Day in many different ways. Every year you can see Americans enjoying patriotic themed clothing, firework displays both big and small, barbecues, picnics, swimming, parties, parades, and spending time with friends and families. However, July 4th isn’t just a chance to enjoy a hot summer day with barbecue, fireworks, and loved ones. It is an important day in American history that was crucial in making the United States of America the great place that it is today. (Although barbecue, fireworks, and festivities are always a fun way to celebrate!)

hg2 emergency lighting - declaration of independence

Our Rich History

Every year, Americans celebrate Independence Day as the day that the Declaration of Independence was officially adopted by the Continental Congress. This important event marked our independence and the birth of our country. Though the first draft of the declaration was submitted on July 2nd, it continued to receive edits until the final wording was just right. Finally, it was unanimously approved on July 4th, 1776. Since then, the 4th of July has been celebrated as the birthday of our country. John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, both of whom were members of the Committee of Five that drafted the original document, died on July 4th, 1826. (That’s exactly 50 years after the first Independence Day!) It is truly a day of American importance and a day to join together and celebrate.

The first anniversary of Independence Day was celebrated with bonfires, fireworks, and the ringing of bells. Though we’ve grown from 13 colonies to 50 states, we celebrate in similar ways! This tradition caught on and even today, we celebrate the 4th of July with our friends and families. We attend patriotic parades and firework displays, and we enjoy music, food, and other festivities. The 4th of July is a day to celebrate being an American and show gratitude for all the brave men and women who made everything possible.

Wishing Everyone a Happy and Safe Independence Day

Whether you’re picnicking with friends and family, spending a day of fun in the sun at the beach, or just taking it easy at home, enjoy your day responsibly. Because we care about our community, safety is always our top priority. Wear sunscreen, designate a driver, and be safe with those fireworks! Come together with friends, family, and your community to celebrate these United States of America.

We are proud to be Americans, not only today but every day. Our rich history, heritage, and the amazing people of this country makes America the great place it is. As an American made company, HG2 Emergency Lighting would like to take this time to honor and thank all those who have fought for the freedom and liberties that we enjoy. We are proud to be a part of the American dream. Thank you to the men and women in the armed forces and law enforcement that protect our country. We truly live in land of the free and the home of the brave. From all of us in the HG2 family, have a happy and safe Independence Day!

The HG2 Buy Back Program

ALWAYS INNOVATING, NEVER IMITATING

At HG2 Emergency Lighting we are always innovating, never imitating. Lighting is necessary for the safety of yourself and others, so we want you to have the very best! To prove that we want the absolute best for our clients, we are proud to present the HG2 Buy Back Program. We’re putting our foot down and taking a stand against inferior, deceptive side lighting! All side lighting is not created equal so we’re here to help! If you know us, you know that we strive to keep our clients happy and safe by buying our own products that are out of warranty. Your safety is our top concern and we don’t want to turn away customers who are in a crisis!

We noticed the hassle and headache that people encountered when dealing with other companies and their inferior, imitation products. Many products may look like ours, but the bottom line is that they just can’t keep up with our innovative designs. We are the originators of side lighting, so why not have the often imitated, NEVER duplicated, original? Turn in any qualifying knock-off runner set from ANY competitor, and we’ll buy it back. In return, we’ll give you our superior product in return at a discounted price. It’s as simple as that!

WHY HG2?

HG2 Emergency Lights are proudly imagined, drawn, engineered, and manufactured in the USA. We are family owned and operated, and we firmly hold our products to a high standard. When we say, “Your safety is the highest priority”, we mean it! HG2 lights are made with no-burnout LEDs, unlike the high temp burnout LEDs used in other lights. Our full product line is SAE certified, which ensures that our lights are designed specifically for the very best in visibility and brightness. Other manufacturers skip this important step because obtaining SAE certification is an expense that they don’t want to pay. The illegal lighting levels of our imitators are not only a safety hazard, the lack of SAE certification leaves agencies vulnerable to lawsuits in the event of an accident on the scene.

Unfortunately, our imitators don’t always put customers first when engineering products. They often manufacture overseas with cheap materials to cut costs. As a result, they and their customers receive a poorly made product. Without proper weather testing, how can you count on your lights to hold up to the elements? With our Buy Back Program, you can be confident that your new lights are extensively tested to hold up to the toughest of weather conditions. If you can’t depend on your lights, you can’t depend on your safety. HG2 emergency lights are extensively tested to be resistant against salt, snow, heat, water, and whatever else mother nature throws at them! You might receive a 3-year or manufacturer’s warranty with other emergency lights, but with HG2, you’ll receive a 5-year warranty. Originators have to make a product before imitators can replicate it. With HG2, you’ll always find the most innovative designs engineered specifically for emergency response vehicles.

hg2 emergency lighting - Happy Father's Day

A Father Lights the Way

THE HG2 SPOTLIGHT

As a family owned and operated company, HG2 Emergency Lighting believes in the special bond of a family. Father’s Day is celebrated throughout the world, on different dates depending on the country. Every year, Americans celebrate Father’s Day on the third Sunday of June, taking the day to celebrate fathers, fatherhood, and the paternal bond.

One of the things that makes this country so great is the diversity of its people. Not all families are alike, and dads come in all different shapes, sizes, and relationships! Some dads are single parents, some dads are caregivers, and some dads are breadwinners. A father wears many hats and can take on many roles! Some are stepdads, some are grandfathers, and some are father figures who might not be related at all. Nowadays, Father’s Day celebrates all father figures, no matter what form they take. Father figures can be anyone, a teacher, a coach, a boss, a coworker, or a friend. A father figure doesn’t even need to be a man, moms can be father figures as well!

LIGHTING THE WAY

So, what makes a father or father figure? A father takes an active role in the life of their child, they may lead by example, offer guidance and encouragement, or they might step back, allowing you to make the mistakes necessary to learn important lessons about the world. A father wants the best for their children and does the best they can to ensure that their children are well-equipped to become strong, self-made, confident adults. A father or father figure lights the way to a bright future.

Nothing is more important than family, and at HG2 Emergency Lighting, we create products to ensure you return safely to your family, time after time. The HG2 Emergency Lighting family would like to take this opportunity to wish all fathers, stepfathers, grandfathers, and father figures a happy and safe Father’s Day weekend!

Picking the Correct Light for the Job

THE HG2 SPOTLIGHT

HG2 emergency lights are certainly bright and eye-catching, but did you know we offer a variety of color options? Whatever color scheme best fits your fleet or vehicle, we’ve got you covered. All HG2 lights are available to order in amber, blue, green, red, and white.

As you know, emergency lighting is absolutely crucial to all kinds of emergency response teams. You need to safely get where you need to be and HG2 emergency lights make that happen by increasing your visibility. Colorful LED emergency lights are brighter and more energy efficient, making them more effective and easier to see. Thanks to an easily recognizable system of light colors for different emergency services, motorists and pedestrians can easily see emergency services on the way, even from a distance!

Different color schemes indicate the specific type of emergency services present. Blue/red, blue/blue, and blue/white variations indicate law enforcement, while red/white, red/red, and red/amber variations indicate fire and rescue. Law enforcement and fire/rescue teams must reach an incident as quickly as possible, so they use LED flashing lights in colors like red, blue, and white, which are easily visible and eye-catching, even in inclement weather, from a distance, or at night. These colors indicate an emergency situation and allow other emergency response teams to easily find the location of an incident, as well as indicating to non-emergency personnel that an emergency situation is underway and to allow room for the appropriate response teams.

Towing and construction vehicles utilize amber/white, amber/amber, and white/white lights. While perhaps not as eye catching as red and blue used by police and fire response teams, amber strobe lights advise motorists that while it may not be an emergency situation, they should exercise caution as they proceed through the area. This is particularly important for teams and individuals that often work roadside or near traffic, such as construction crews and towing. Less commonly seen are green/amber lights, generally used by security vehicles. The presence of a security vehicle doesn’t necessarily indicate an emergency, but green and amber lights still provide visibility for the vehicle, both in full daylight and after dark.

HG2 emergency lights are used by vehicles across the country as well as across the world. We know that depending on location, required color schemes may vary greatly. Our entire line is made to order and totally customizable, so you’re guaranteed to get exactly what you need, no matter the vehicle or color combination! Looking for something a little more covert? HG2 low profile light bars allow a subtle look, until you need to be seen, then you’ll be hard to miss! Our dual color light bars offer extreme visibility in eye catching color, so from side runner to rear runner, from visor to grill, HG2 emergency lighting gives you 360 degrees of visibility.
